Pennsylvania Ballot Access Coalition

Tuesday, March 15th, 2005

I urge everyone to visit the Pennsylvania Ballot Access Coalition site.  Read their .pdf report with anything approaching an open mind and you’ll see how critical this very broad coalition is to the promotion of representative democracy in our backwater commonwealth.  I’ll be working with them to the best of my ability in the coming months to see that attempts at squashing citizen participation such as the Randolph for Congress campaign debacle will not be repeated.

You hear that, Bureau of Commissions, Elections and Legislation?  We’re a-comin’ for ya.  Be very afraid.

Forgotten songs of the 1960s

Tuesday, March 15th, 2005

An ongoing feature of the Yawp will be a listing of at least one lost audio gem of the magical musical decade which represents the best modern pop sounds have had to offer.  I would expect that most of you will not have heard of the songs I encourage you to familiarize yourselves with here, unless you’ve been on the receiving end of one of my many gift compilations.  (The gift is ultimately to myself, sneakily attempting to swing your tastes my way and improving my own sonic environment.  Such a cad am I.)

Today I present 10 somewhat-to-very obscure songs You Should Not Live Without, even if just to get some content up here.  Most of the time expect me to post one song with each other flight of postings, and for ones with really interesting stories attached I’ll ramble on about them as well.  Here goes an initial list:

"Dark White" - Sean Bonniwell’s Music Machine

"Painting on Wood" - The Magicians

"Sam Stone" - John Prine

"San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native)" - Fever Tree

"In Your Tower" - The Poets

"Gratefully Dead" - Eric Burdon & The Animals

"Creeping Jean" - Dave Davies

"Funnel of Love" - Wanda Jackson

"Wasted Words" - The Motions

"Blue Law Sunday" - The Misty Wizards
